Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of foot and heel pain in adults between the ages of 40-60 year of age, However it also occurs at a younger age in physically active individuals such as runners, and dancers. It is considered to be a degenerative condition, with overuse being a common contributing factor. You can have Plantar fasciitis with or without inflammation, primarily affecting the plantar fascia origin at the medial aspect of the calcaneal tuberosity.
Signs and symptoms.
- Heel pain, commonly in the centre of the underside of the heel, or at the front or sides of the underside of the heel
- Pain in these regions being its worst first thing in the morning, or after prolonged periods of rest.
- Mild swelling under the heel
- Tight calves are a significant contributor to Plantar fasciitis
What are the risk factors for Plantar Fasciitis?
- Excessive pronation (feet roll inwards)
- Overuse -Training too much, too soon.
- Being Overweight
- Leg-length discrepancy
- High arches or flat feet
- Tight achilles tendons or tight calf muscles
- Pregnancy
- Ageing: Weakening of ligaments and the thinning of the fat pad underneath the foot over time
What can you do to help?
- Rest: avoid barefoot walking on hard surfaces and exercises involving running, uphill walking, or standing for long periods.
- Self-management strategies as directed by the Chiropractor, such as ice therapy, self-massage, use of compression socks and stretching
